Today, after several days of media focus after VP Biden's statements Sunday about same sex marriage, president Obama made a statement today saying that he now was supporting same sex marriage, not just civil unions.

This is probably a wash for Obama politically. The polls supposedly say tha the country is about 50 - 50 on the issue. But where it could benefit Obama is that if the gay community gets really fired up, that could increase turnout, and with Romney responding by saying that he was sticking with his anti-same sex marriage position, all of that vote is going to go with Obama.

But regardless of the politics of it, it took a lot of guts for Obama to go public with this. I take my hat off to him for showing some unequivocal backbone. He often finds a way to avoid taking such stands, and this one is one that is not easy. There will be some backlash against him for it, and he decided to withstand it. I support and congratulate Obama for doing this.
